Software and Services
- Microsoft 365: Louisiana Tech provides free access to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more through Microsoft 365. Learn more at helpdesk.latech.edu
- Antivirus Software: Strongly recommended before arriving on campus
- Avoid: Installing torrent/file-sharing apps (e.g., LimeWire) to prevent malware, slowdowns, and copyright violations
Hardware Accessories
- Printer: A multifunction printer/scanner (laser or inkjet) is recommended for convenience
- External Mouse: Optional, but may improve productivity
- Protective Case: Encouraged to prevent damage during transport
Warranty and Support
- Consider purchasing accidental damage protection for the laptop to cover drops, spills, and other incidents
- A 3- or 4-year warranty is highly recommended to ensure support through graduation
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
- Most required business software is available via Louisiana Tech’s Virtual Desktop at virtual.latech.edu
- VDI reduces the need for high-end local specs, but having a capable device still enhances performance and user experience
Purchasing Tips
- Acceptable new laptops start around $600-$800. Higher-end models ($1,200+) offer better longevity and quality
- If purchasing a refurbished device, sites like PCLiquidations, Dell Refurbished, and Back Market are good options. Ensure it meets or exceeds the minimum specs
Help and Support
- The University IT Helpdesk is available during normal business hours in the basement of Wyly Tower. You can submit a request for help using the email address: helpdesk@latech.edu.

Final Notes
- Bring your laptop with a clean, updated installation of Windows or macOS
- Prioritize your academic needs. Heavy media use (games, movies, large downloads) can affect system performance when using tools like Microsoft Visual Studio, VMware Workstation, or analytics software.
- Make a smart investment. Your laptop will be a daily tool throughout your time at Louisiana Tech. Buy one that will last.
